“Wax on, wax off.”
Remember the days when those words brought to mind happy memories and not painful experiences? Actually, “wax on” is not the bad guy. It’s the utterance of “wax off” that serves as the trigger that sends some girls into a PTSD* flashback. And with good reason! The “wax off” part of the equation can be quite brutal. Really think about it…melted wax! Melted, HOT wax…on your most delicate parts! Is it me or is something very wrong here?
Unbelievably, some girls claim that they actually like it and gladly return for more. Gwyneth Paltrow actually stated some years ago that having a Brazilian wax at J Sisters (salon) here in NYC, “changed her life.” Do you think she really meant for the better? Uhmm,…that’s a hard one to call when on the other hand, we have actress Lisa Barbuscia’s comments on record about her first Brazilian wax: “It was so painful I collapsed. I only fainted, but I was nearly carted off to the hospital and I have vowed never to try it again.”
Enough said.
If you have also vowed to never again put yourself through that for any man–even your Mr. Big–I have the perfect solution for “faking” a wax: Magic Skin Conditioning Shaving Powder by SoftSheen-Carson. And it is indeed “magic.”
Magic Skin Conditioning Shaving Powder was initially developed for black men. Black men are more prone to developing ingrown hairs and razor bumps after shaving because of their curlier hair texture. This shaving powder minimizes razor bumps with its gentle formulation and skin conditioning properties. Skin soothing ingredients include jojoba oil, aloe vera, Vitamin E (as well as castor, coconut and apricot kernel oils).
Before use, you mix the powder with water to form a creamy paste. You then apply it, leave it on for 5-7 minutes and remove with a small spatula. In comparison to other depilatories, e.g., Nair, Neet, etc., it is less irritating and produces results closest to a waxing: Super soft, baby-smooth skin. And I know it’s so cliché to say, but your neither regions will really feel just like a baby’s behind. (A baby’s behind without diaper rash!)
And the best part? It’s painless. I must admit that the smell isn’t flowery, but it’s preferable to torture on any day.
So, if you’d do anything for love (but you won’t do that) swing by your local drugstore and pick up a lil’ bit of Magic. I assure you, your man will be spellbound and none the wiser.
- SoftSheen-Carson’s Magic Skin Conditioning Shaving Powder (US$2.99) is the clever & sophisticated girl’s inexpensive and painless substitute for Bikini waxes.
- Note: Magic shaving powder is sold in different formulations. This review refers ONLY to the gentlest formulation in the platinum can (skin conditioning formula). Use of stronger formulations is not recommended for bikini area use.
- Please read all directions on can before use.
- Available online at www.Amazon.com.

This stuff rocks! To say my legs feel like a baby’s bottom does not do them justice. My legs – no lie – feel like I have NEVER had hair on them, ever. It’s amazing. They are so smooth I can’t stop touching them (I know, that sounds bad but it’t true). The only thing that kinda sucks about the whole thing is that it is kind of a messy process. But for the results, I would definitely do it again. If a professional salon offered a service using this product I would totally pay for it, the results are worth it – and someone else could deal with the mess! (=

how long does it last

The product removes hair at the surface of your skin, not from the root. So, the regrowth time will depend on the speed of your hair growth.

Christina, you can find Magic Shave at your local drugstore or online (Amazon.com and others). In store, you should find it in the Men’s Care section with the shave creams, razors, etc.

Hello
The direction on the can said 2 teaspoon of powder and you mix the same amount of water to it. Mine came out very watery.. Should I just add more powder to make it paste like? I’m currently getting Brazilian every 5 weeks and each time it’s $60!!! This seems like a good alternative to it.. Plus it will save me lots of money :)

Nikki- Yes, just add some more powder until it is the right consistency. I never use exact measurements; I adjust water or powder until I have the “right” consistency.

I bought the magic razorless “cream” shave from the same company and I find it works but not amazingly. It left some stubble on my legs. Does anybody know if the “powder” version is more effective than the cream version I bought? If so, I will try the powder. Comments appreciated.

Alexis, I have never tried the cream version of Magic Shave. I’ve asked a few people and everyone is only familiar with the powder version. The powder version works very well and you can adjust the strength and consistency depending on how much water you add. Give it a go and see if it works better for you. Just make sure to start out with a conditioning or sensitive skin formula as the “regular” formulas can be a tad bit strong for delicate areas.
