A gorgeous sheath dress for $35?!

November 16th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Audrey on a Motorcycle

I don’t know about you, but when I visualize a sheath dress I always see Audrey in my mind’s eye. Classy, stylish and so womanly; the sheath is my all-time favorite dress cut. Its figure-hugging form never goes out of style and is extremely flattering to all body types. If you are thin, it will give you curves. If you are thick, it will give you a nice silhouette. And if you are simply a hot mamma jamma with some dangerous curves, watch out because men will be following you down the street. The sheath emphasizes everything you’ve got…for the bettah, darling!

This fall femininity is what’s hot in fashion. Adding a new sheath dress to your wardrobe will keep you in style this season and for many, many seasons to come. Beautiful sheath dresses are easy to come by right now as they are currently in demand, but this is not always the case. If you love the style (as I do!) this would be the year to buy not just one, but a few for your wardrobe.

Some of the nicer dresses currently available at major retailers are pretty pricey:

This “Betty Criterium” dress by Theory is $275. (Bloomingdale’s)

Theory Sheath Dress $275

For $620 you can add this Piazza Sempione dress to your wardrobe. (Nordstrom)

Piazza Sempione Sheath dress $620

However, if you are a clever shopper and want this look for less (and I mean much less), go to H&M today and pick up their version of the sleeveless black sheath dress for $34.90.

H&M Blk Sheath Dress - Fall 2007I found this dress today in the H&M on 34th Street in NYC across from Macy’s. At the time, there were about eight left on the rack. I just had a feeling it was going to be a winner. I skipped to the dressing room, tried it on and it fit like a glove (and unleashed my inner Audrey)! Needless to say, I brought this baby home with me. It is definitely a keeper! As long as I don’t gain a pound (yes, it hugs me that much) I see myself wearing this dress for years to come.

Note that the dress has a silhouette similar to the Theory dress, but with prettier details. It has darts in all the right places, a banded waist for definition and a beautiful boatneck. It is 69% polyester, 29% rayon and 3% spandex. The fabric and construction does not look at all cheap. A 3-Second Impression (3ST) deems this dress in the “mid-priced” to “costly” range.

As you know, merchandise at H&M turns over fast! Really good deals there are gone even faster. This dress might not be on the racks tomorrow. For $34.90 you just can’t beat it.

I love H&M! Have I told you that before? Oh, I have? My bad.

H&M Blk Sheath Dress (Details)

  • H&M’s black sleeveless sheath dress (US$34.90) is the clever & sophisticated shopper’s ideal classic sheath dress (which can do double-duty as a LBD (”little black dress”) fit for all types of occasions!)

Any idea where I can get this dress in a size 4? I would take a used one if necessary.

If not, where can I get the Theory “Betty Criterium” dress? I’ve tried Bloomindales, but they’re out.

    Hi, Cherie.

The H&M Sheath dress was available last Fall (’07), therefore it will probably be hard to find now at H&M locations. You might want to check Ebay every so often, you might just have a lucky day and find the dress on there.

The Theory “Betty Criterium” dress is unfortunately also an offering from last season and is currently unavailable. (Apparently it was in high demand this Spring after Marilu Henner wore it on Celebrity Apprentice.)

I searched online for you and came across a few black sheath dresses. I can’t vouch for their quality, but they are all reasonably priced and similar to the ones in my story. Let me know if any of these work out for you! -TCS
